Juror Comments by Marvin Wax, September 5, 2008

I was delighted to be given the privilege and opportunity to look at a myriad of wonderful visual expressions. PHIG participants represent a local photography segment. However some of the work can well hold its own with the broader national names in photography. The photographers at PHIG can be thankful that Pete Zivkov has given us his time and energy to further photography as a significant art form.

My role as a judge was not an easy task. I had to cull the submissions in half with the full realization and sensitivity that some photographers will not be shown. I had to consider the total look on the walls as they were hung. The flow and compatibility of images were a selection factor. I invite all to see this gratifying show of talent.

Marvin Wax

1st Place: ADRIENNE DEFENDI - “Pentimento 4”

Small image size brings the viewer to closer scrutiny. The soft visual content leads the viewer to ponder and interpret. A potent demonstration for the love of photography.

2nd Place: JOE DECKER - “Detifoss Mists #2”

A black and white print that is partially explained but well conceived. Upon closer examination of print the viewer can only surmise what he or she is looking at. The incompleteness is very intriguing.

3rd Place: YAO-PI HSU - “Jelly Fish”

A gentle flow of many jellyfish. The multiplicity of the visual parts composes into a very coherent and sensitive design. The personality and signature of the photographer becomes very evident and clear.

Honorable Mention: JACK SIMON - “Facing Mao”

I chuckled several times after viewing this colorful photograph. I had laughter that I could not explain. Laughter is vital to our survival. I would be very curious to hear the maker add his point of view to this photograph.

Honorable Mention: PAUL GRANT - “Pebble Beach”

An unusual color interpretation of the much photographed “Pebble Beach”

The painterly intrusion of color makes this photograph special and a visual treat.

Honorable Mention: RYAN BUSH - “Impromptu #100”

A linear interpretation of wires invading the sky. A refreshing absence of tonality and a strong presence of design and composition.

Honorable Mention: MARY GOW - “Defining Time in Cycles and Periods”

The black and white photogram demonstrates that wonderful and personal imagery can be had without the use of a camera. A serious commitment by the photographer to the revival of a darkroom technique of the past.
