Show Juror: Robert Buelteman
is committed to the great things in life as reflected in his photographs, which portray the universe as designed and life as purposeful. His print work is a powerful extraction of beauty and substance revealing unrecognized dimensions in the commonplace.
Buelteman developed his love of the landscape as a child growing up in the small town of Woodside on the peninsula south of the city of San Francisco. From his family home he looked out on the Santa Cruz Mountains, whose deep canyons, redwood groves, and daily tides of ocean-borne fog inspired the veneration of life and light that appear in his work today.
He has published 9 photographic portfolios in his twenty-five years behind the camera, and three of these, A Vision of Life (1988), The Unseen Peninsula (1994), and Eighteen Days in June (2000), were published as books. His most recent book was based on a body of work he created while at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in 1996.
In 1999, Buelteman left photographic tradition behind in creating Through the Green Fuse, a portfolio of extraordinary images made without the use of cameras, lenses, or computers. As a result of the success of this new work, Rob was invited to work as the Artist-in-Residence at the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico in 2003.
He has received accolades from institutions as diverse as the United States Congress, the Commonwealth Club of California, and the Natural Resources Defense Council.
His work can be found in public and private collections worldwide, including the Yale University Art Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Bank of America, Xerox, and Nikon.

PHIG 2007 Juried Group Show: Juror Comments by Robert Buelteman
It is both a challenge and a delight to curate a show such as this. For this particular exhibition, I looked for artwork in which “Captured Light” not only defined the overall impression of the piece, but was also PRESENT – a living, breathing presence in the print itself. I describe presence as being similar to the distinction between being in love and reading about it – similar only in theory, and worlds apart in our experience of it.
As Edwin Land said many years ago:
“The challenge of making a non-sentimental statement about a grand insight into the abstract is multiplied a thousand fold when the components of the subject have names and reminiscences to characterize them: tree and twig, brook and boulder.
Components assembled, furthermore, not as accidents, but in their natural habitat as ordinary beautiful arrangements.
The photographer demonstrates that there is no greater aesthetic power than the conversion of the familiar into the unbelievably new.”
Best in Show:

First Place:
Grand Canal, Linda Fitch, Silver-Selenium Gelatin Print
This is a simple image of an all-too-often photographed subject, executed in such a way that the resulting experience is greater than the sum of its parts. The well-crafted richness of the print deepens the beauty and mystery of the scene. This is a piece Land could have used as an example in the quote above.

Second Place:
Door and Window, Richard Stultz, Archival Pigment Print
Simplicity and complexity, hard edge and soft edge, the mundane and the extraordinary, all captured in a single image that speaks to the perfection of the moment.

Third Place:
Sunlight, Patrick Point, John Eaton, Archival Pigment Print
Life and light bursting through the coastal forest - a familiar subject made new by the presence of light.
Honorable Mention:
Grey Virga, Ittoqqortoormiit, Joe Decker, Chromogenic Print
The power, beauty and mystery of ancient nature.
Pescadero Creek, Marvin Wax, Archival Pigment Print
A painterly study of what would otherwise be an ordinary scene, made new through the photographer’s eyes.
Lyric O, Mary Gow, Silver Gelatin Silver Photogram
Pure invention, challenging the viewer to consider the possibilities of the image.
