PHIG 2005 Group Show: Juror Comments by Mark Citret
1st Place, "Tree Ballet and Pogonip" by Joe Decker - The simplicity and elegance of these images appealed to me immediately and awarding of 1st place is really to both photographs as variations on a quite subtle theme.
2nd Place, "Syncopated Stairs" by Nancy H. Cole - This sort of complicated geometric design can be extremely difficult to isolate in the viewfinder and present in a photograph. I feel this photograph succeeds beautifully.
3rd Place, "Arastadero Tree" by Tony Coluzzi - Another simple and elegant image with rich texture and tonality. The visual pun of the tree continuing the line of the path into the sky is nicely done.
Honorable Mention, "Kyoto Station Detail" by Lisa Leinbaugh - This photograph brings to mind the facets of an intricately cut diamond. Intelligently seen and executed.
Honorable Mention, "El Paseo, Santa Barbara" by Pete Zivkov - A classic and beautiful architectural photograph. A good combination of the wonderful qualities of both photography and architecture.
Honorable Mention, "Tracy #3" by Tom Thackrey - Since the show is predominately "straight photography. I feel it's important to recognize the fine work done in "alternative" processes in this show. What I find especially noteworthy about this piece is that it reflects the same sensibility as the "straight" piece by the same photographer. This says to me that "seeing" is more important than the technique employed.
Honorable Mention, "Lake Union #11" by Deborah Mills Thackrey - A really fine example of a photograph finding "hidden messages" in the everyday world. A lyrical and clever photograph.
About Monochrome: At the start, I want to say how impressed I was with the consistently high quality if the work submitted. However, in the midst of this group of excellent photographs, a few stood out as obvious selections for the show. These were about evenly divided between natural landscapes and architectural images with a strong geometric sense. This group of 6-10 photographs became the foundation upon which the selection of the show was based.
Unfortunately this meant that some very good photographs were eliminated simply because there was no apparent way to integrate them into the visual flow of the exhibit.
My thanks to the participating members of the Pacific Art League for giving me the opportunity of playing a part of this impressive group show.
